Feng Shui and Clutter

TLC Feng Shui Swoosh

Clutter clearing is the first and most important rule of Feng Shui, so understanding Feng Shui and Clutter is the first step before any other cures can be effective.

When the energy (chi) flows well around your space, your health, wealth and happiness significantly improve.

Clutter will block this energy and unless it is tackled, no amount of good Feng Shui will be effective.

So what is Clutter?

Cluttered Room

Clutter is stuck energy.  The word ‘clutter’ derives from the Middle English word ‘clotter’ which means ‘to coagulate’.

It starts small but grows & grows and with it stagnant energy, meaning you need more energy to then shift it.

Stuck energy is very ‘sticky’ – so its very easy for you to let it stay put.

You need a good reason to do something about it – understanding why it’s there and how it affects you is crucial.

But what is it exactly?

  • Anything you don’t want, love, need or use.  If you surround yourself with things you love, they raise your energy like a golden cobweb.  With items you don’t want, love or use, the opposite is true.  They attach themselves to you, like a ball & chain, dragging your energy down whenever you catch sight of them.

  • Things that are untidy or disorganised

  • Too many things in too small a space

  • Anything unfinished, never started or broken, i.e. dripping taps, blown light bulbs or broken gadgets – fix or throw away

  • Things you’re keeping just in case’ (fear of letting go)

  • Unwanted gifts (kept through obligation or duty)

  • Collections (think again – what are they giving you?)

  • Phone calls you need to make or relationships you need to move on from

How does it affect you?

Clutter can:

  • Make you feel tired & lethargic

  • Keep you in the past – no room for anything new

  • Physically congest your body & affect body weight

  • Confuse and depress you

  • Make you procrastinate or disorganised

  • Cause disharmony, especially if different members of the family see ‘clutter’ differently.

  • Distract you from important things

Unhappy, Depressed

Why do people keep clutter?

  • Clutter is in your life for a reason, it’s not there by accident.  Understanding why helps you release it, as it loses its power

  • Keeping things ‘just in case’

  • Sentimental reasons

  • Through obligation or duty when you receive a present you wouldn’t have chosen for yourself.

  • Inherited attitudes from parents

  • To enhance status & boost self-esteem

  • Persuasive advertising/buying things you don’t need (for security or in a belief that more is better)

  • To keep busy & avoid looking inward

Letting Go

Life is constantly changing.  When something comes into your life, enjoy it, use it well & when it’s time, let it go.  It’s that simple.

Just because you own something, you don’t have to keep it forever.

Let go of fear.  People hold on to clutter because they are afraid to let it go, afraid of emotions they may experience while sorting through it, afraid they will make a mistake & regret getting rid of it, afraid they will leave themselves vulnerable, exposed or at risk in some way.  Clutter clearing can bring up a lot of ‘stuff’ to be faced & dealt with.
